Climate Wizard
In this game you play as a wizard that has control over the distance of the sun.
It was for the climate change gamejam, so this game was made in a very short time.
I wanted to create a game that took a different take on a changing climate, and was quickly set on wanting to make something for the 3DS.
I quickly realized that the sun had a lot of impact on everything and decided that with the two screens it would be cool to control the distance of it.
After prototyping it, my friend wanted to help and provided artwork for said feature. In order to make it feel more smooth and impactful I added a lerp effect and have the earth have different emotions. (I personally really liked doing that)
Once all that was done I was wondering what I could do with this mechanic, the first thing I thought of was meling and freezing things.
However I quickly found out that softlocking was a big problem with it. I took inspiration on NES games where things get reset once they appear on screen. On the NES it was a limitation, while here it was intentional!
This way, if the player messed up they could go back and forth to reset the puzzle!
With the mechanics being a little finnickey, I also added a jump so that players could continue onward without getting stuck.
Most importantly; I made sure the game could be played with the control stick while holding a stylus.
It was a very fun experimental project, especially for how much time it took.
